Ingredients
- For the hush puppies
1 cup 1 yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup 1/2 all-purpose flour
2 tsp 2 baking powder
1/2 tsp 1/2 salt
1 small 1 red onion, diced
1/4 cup 1/4 fresh jalapeno pepper, diced
1 1 egg
3/4 cup 3/4 milk
vegetable oil, for frying
- For the dipping sauce
1/2 cup 1/2 mayonnaise
2 tbsp 2 ketchup
2 tbsp 2 sweet pickle relish
1 tsp 1 Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp 1 garlic powder
salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
- Make the Hush Puppies
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder.
- Add the diced onion and jalapeno pepper to the mixing bowl and stir until combined.
- In a separate small mixing bowl, beat the egg and milk together.
- Pour the egg mixture into the cornmeal mixture and stir until combined.
- In a large deep pot or fryer, heat enough vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
- Using a small cookie scoop or spoon, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry the hush puppies for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the hush puppies from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
- Make the Dipping Sauce
- In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder until well combined.
- Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the dipping sauce in a small bowl alongside the hush puppies.
