With their crispy exterior, soft interior, and spicy kick from the jalapeno peppers, these hush puppies are a great choice for a tasty appetizer or side dish at your next gathering.

Ingredients

  • For the hush puppies
  • 1 cup 1 yellow cornmeal

  • 1/2 cup 1/2 all-purpose flour

  • 2 tsp 2 baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp 1/2 salt

  • 1 small 1 red onion, diced

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 fresh jalapeno pepper, diced

  • 1 1 egg

  • 3/4 cup 3/4 milk

  • vegetable oil, for frying

  • For the dipping sauce
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 mayonnaise

  • 2 tbsp 2 ketchup

  • 2 tbsp 2 sweet pickle relish

  • 1 tsp 1 Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp 1 garlic powder

  • salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

  • Make the Hush Puppies
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder.
  • Add the diced onion and jalapeno pepper to the mixing bowl and stir until combined.
  • In a separate small mixing bowl, beat the egg and milk together.
  • Pour the egg mixture into the cornmeal mixture and stir until combined.
  • In a large deep pot or fryer, heat enough vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
  • Using a small cookie scoop or spoon, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry the hush puppies for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the hush puppies from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
  • Make the Dipping Sauce
  • In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder until well combined.
  • Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve the dipping sauce in a small bowl alongside the hush puppies.
