Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned cocktails

Ahhh, the Old Fashioned cocktail. It may possibly be the most talked about drink of our time. Everyone has their opinion on what the perfect Old Fashioned looks like. Personally, I like mine simple and classic. Ask anyone who knows us well and they will agree – my husband has perfected the Old Fashioned. Here’s his recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz 1.5 Premium bourbon or rye

  • .5 oz .5 simple sugar

  • 6 to 7 drops 6 to 7 Angostura bitters

  • 2 2 Luxardo Cherrie

Directions

  • Add all liquid ingredients to a large cocktail mixing tin and set aside.
  • Using a peeler, peel a slice of orange rind.
  • Rub the rim of an Old Fashioned glass with the rind, then place the rind in the bottom of the glass.
  • Fill the glass with 4 to 5 ice cubes or one ice ball, then add 2 to 3 cubes to the mixing tin and stir until cold.
  • Pour into glass and garnish with the cherries.
  • ** To make simple sugar, simply boil one cup of sugar with one cup of water until the sugar is dissolved. Allow to cool before storing or using.

Notes

  • In our opinion, Angel’s Envy Rye makes the ultimate Old Fashioned. However, we still enjoy them with any excellent bourbon or rye. Rye has a bit more bite to withstand the sugar in an Old Fashioned. ALSO…Luxardo Cherries are a must. You will ruin your Old Fashioned with any other cherry. Upon request, my husband drizzles a little of the Luxardo syrup from the cherries into the bottom of my Old Fashioned glass.

Bourbon stole my heart a few years ago when I had several opportunities to write about it. Food stole my heart when I was lucky enough to be raised by a mom who managed to make nearly everything from scratch when we were growing up.
